DEA To 22-Year Old Traveler: Thanks, I’ll Take That Cash

RiversJoline Gutierrez Krueger – Maybe he should have taken traveler’s checks.

But it’s too late for that now. All the money – $16,000 in cash – that Joseph Rivers said he had saved and relatives had given him to launch his dream in Hollywood is gone, seized during his trip out West not by thieves but by Drug Enforcement Administration agents during a stop at the Amtrak train station in Albuquerque.

An incident some might argue is still theft, just with the government’s blessing.

Rivers, 22, wasn’t detained and has not been charged with any crime since his money was taken last month.

That doesn’t matter. Under a federal law enforcement tool called civil asset forfeiture, he need never be arrested or convicted of a crime for the government to take away his cash, cars or property – and keep it.

Agencies like the DEA can confiscate money or property if they have a hunch, a suspicion, a notion that maybe, possibly, perhaps the items are connected with narcotics. Or something else illegal.

Or maybe the fact that the person holding a bunch of cash is a young black man is good enough.

“What this is, is having your money stolen by a federal agent acting under the color of law,” said Michael Pancer, a San Diego attorney who represents Rivers, an aspiring music video producer. “It’s a national epidemic. If my office got four to five cases just recently, and I’m just one attorney, you know this is happening thousands of times.”

A Washington Post investigation last year found that local, state and federal agents nationwide have seized $2.5 billion in cash from almost 62,000 people since 2001 – without warrants or indictments. It’s unknown how many got their money back. Continue reading

Court Upholds $50 Million Award For Girl Whose Life Was Destroyed By Johnson & Johnson’s Children’s Motrin

– The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court upheld a lower court’s judgment that pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson should be required to pay $50 million to a girl who suffered a rare but devastating side effect from Children’s Motrin when she was seven years old. The judgment took more than a decade to be reached.

Samantha Reckis experienced toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), which burned off 90 percent of her skin, destroyed 80 percent of her lung capacity and left her blind. Only luck and the efforts of her doctors prevented her from dying or suffering permanent brain damage.

Johnson & Johnson will also be required to pay $6.5 million to each of Reckis’ parents. On top of that, the company will owe interest on all three payments, bringing the total owed to more than $109 million.

Widespread organ failure

TEN is a severe form of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which occurs most commonly as a side effect of drugs including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, which includes ibuprofen/Motrin), penicillin, anticonvulsants and anti-gout drugs.

Reckis’s case was triggered in 2003, when her father gave her two doses of Children’s Motrin for a fever and sinus congestion. The next morning, her symptoms were no better, and she had also developed a rash and a sore throat. Her father gave her more Motrin and took her to a pediatrician, who told her parents to give her the drug three times per day. Continue reading

There Is Nothing As Powerful As A Changed Mind

“There is NOTHING as powerful as a changed mind. You can change your hair, your clothing, your address, your spouse, your friends, but if you don’t change your mind, the same experience will perpetuate itself over and over again because everything outwardly changed but nothing inwardly changed.” ~ Bishop TD Jakes

changeLuminita D. SaviucThere was a time when I would spend a lot of energy trying to change the outside world, thinking that by doing so I was going to feel happier and my life was going to get a lot better. Because I honestly thought that I couldn’t be happy unless the outside circumstances were different, I would try very hard to change everything and everyone. But after a while, because I realized I was going nowhere with that approach, I stopped trying to change the world and I began changing myself  instead.

‘Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” ~ Rumi

I started changing my mind, my thoughts, my beliefs and my ideas about who I was and about how life was meant to function. And in time I realized that by doing so, not only did I start feeling a lot more relaxed and happier about myself and my life, but life seemed to get easier and easier. And I no longer felt the need to change the outside world. Why? Because I finally understood that the world is nothing but a projection of who we ourselves are. And that if we change our thoughts, our beliefs, our attitudes and our perceptions, the world around us will change as well. It’s magic :) Continue reading

Today’s energetics center heavily around cooperation and collaboration. When responsibilities are shared, a better result is achieved.

People of like-mind are drawn together to accomplish things, as well. Relationships will undergo change, transformation, and evolution during a window of time that opened with Sunday’s New Moon and continues through May 26, 2015. Venus is opposing Pluto and making a square with Uranus. All that is developing or changing within relationships is designed to bring us into alignment with what is best. Uranus guarantees this. Dramatic or disruptive events may occur to make things the way they need to be, if it takes that. The highest octave of this dynamic is a blissful transcendence of the ordinary. (Keep in mind that our relationship with our self is included in this.) Continue reading
