Wal-Mart Asks Meat Suppliers To Reduce Antibiotic Use In U.S. Market

Reuters – Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) said its U.S. units were asking meat suppliers to reduce the use of antibiotics in animals, joining the list of U.S. companies that have responded to consumer and government concerns over the excess use of drugs in livestock.

antibioticsWalmart U.S. and Sam’s Club U.S. will also ask suppliers to provide annual reports on antibiotics management and animal welfare, the world’s largest retailer said on Friday.

Public health experts and federal regulators are concerned that routine feeding of antibiotics to animals could spur creation of antibiotic-resistant superbugs in humans, creating a health hazard.

Wal-Mart’s U.S. units will ask suppliers to limit the use of antibiotics for the treatment of sick animals and not to boost their growth, the company said.

“We have listened to our customers, and are asking our suppliers to engage in improved reporting standards and transparency measures regarding the treatment of farm animals,” Kathleen McLaughlin, senior vice president of Walmart sustainability, said in a statement.

Tyson Foods Inc (TSN.N), the largest U.S. poultry producer, said in April that it planned to eliminate the use of human antibiotics in its chicken flocks by September 2017.

McDonald’s Corp (MCD.N) also said in March its U.S. restaurants would gradually stop buying chicken raised with human antibiotics over the next two years.

However, Sanderson Farms Inc (SAFM.O), the third largest U.S. poultry producer, said on Wednesday that it planned to continue using antibiotics on its birds, partly because there are no alternatives on the horizon for treating a deadly but common gut disease.

Under its new policy, Wal-Mart will also ask suppliers to address animal welfare concerns related to habitation and slaughter.

Wal-Mart’s shares were down slightly at $75.99 in late morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday.

  1. You and Kevin have provided valid perspectives on the Walmart (and therefore ‘big box’) paradigm and I would ask that you consider another view. I know of several middle and upper middle income families who have hit upon rough times due to down-sizing and outright job loss yet prefer not to go the government assistance route.

The ‘big box’ paradigm plays a role in the present state of the economy yet an irony exists in that it is the lower prices offered by that very option that have enabled many middle and upper middle-class families to stay off the dole, sense of pride intact…a truly thought-provoking conundrum.

    1. Hi Rose! You write “it is the lower prices offered by that very option that have enabled many middle and upper middle-class families to stay off the dole, sense of pride intact…a truly thought-provoking conundrum.”

Of course you’re correct and thank you for pointing this out, Rose. That is what is so frightening to the Controllers. For every evil they do some UNINTENDED good outcome invariably arises. And while this entire sick agenda needs to go the way of smoke signals it is these UNINTENDED outcomes that prove their grip on earth reality is slipping. Hugs, g

    2. Hi Rose and Gillian, good points made.

To Walmart or not to Walmart. It truly is a catch 22, especially for people living on the edge. The low prices can help families who are struggling to survive, yet by giving Walmart your money, it enables Walmart’s destructive business model. I guess I try to err on the side of ‘do no evil’ or ‘don’t make the evil worse’ lol.

I certainly don’t fault anyone for doing what they need to do to survive. I guess for people like me who are willing and able to shop at places other than Walmart, we can pick up extra items to donate to our local food banks. Until this present darkness ends, we just have to do the best we can in whatever way we can, for ourselves and others. Truly may this oppression and insanity quickly come to an end.

  2. It’s a step in the right direction as far as public health goes, but there are still plenty of reasons for me to continue to avoid shopping at Walmart. The Walmart business model directly contributes to massive outsourcing of materials and jobs to China, the closing of locally owned businesses, destruction of small town economies, and the continuing dependence of Walmart employees on public assistance programs. Walmart is just evil, plain and simple.

    1. Hi Kevin, everything you say about the Walmart chain could be said about all the American corporations who have moved jobs overseas, laid off Americans and otherwise shafted America.

Walmart just happens to be the biggest, possibly baddest, example of what NAFTA and other GLOBALIST-inspired trade agreements have wrought. At least there is some good emerging from Walmart’s practices in that they now have a big enough corporate stick to influence the direction in which the food chain goes. They are also driving bringing organic food and non-GMO contaminated products to the market for a price that MORE Americans can afford than those who are able to shop at Whole Foods. Walmart’s actions have sparked many other surprising positive developments among local grocery chains and large national chains to source HEALTH instead of DEATH.

So in addition to avoiding Walmart you would have to cease using the internet, iPads and iPhones, laptops, cars, lights, gasoline – pretty much everything as 99% of it is now sourced from overseas. And THAT is not Walmart’s creation. That is a high level globalist agenda creation to destroy the Untied States of America from within. g

    2. So, Walmart is the cause of jobs moving overseas…is that right? I would suggest a look at the possibility that our administrations, (current and past) and ALL financial trends are supported by the laws passed by our OWN politicians. Those tax policies support the jobs exodus because the laws are stacked against businesses being able to sustain enough profit margin to stay viable and stay located in the USA.The unfair advantage of tariffs established by competitive foreign markets policies against importing products made in the USA make American made good uncompetitive in overseas markets and here at home as well.
It is every business and corporation’s business model to above all else to turn a profit. If they can do that they can expand production….build factories or open new stores and ultimately…..HIRE more people who can then take earned income and go buy the products that they desire.
That you have financial wherewithal to not need to shop at Walmart is a choice you have probably earned…thru having a good paying job……to blame Walmart for other peoples lack of having that same ability is……ludicrous.

      1. William, I have edited this comment rather than remove it because you make excellent points. However, when your points became less specific to Walmart and more targeted on another commenter you crossed the line. I have deleted that material. g
