Retail Giant Costco To Become New Reigning King of Organic Food Sales

Nick Meyer – When most people think of organic foods and where to get them, they usually tend to think of Whole Foods first.

The Austin, TX-based upscale chain moved to the forefront of the organic grocery industry by making a commitment to local and organic food producers, and combining a love of good food with better quality ingredients.

costcoBut lately, the profile of the organic shopper has changed dramatically, as the movement has gone mainstream.

Customers are increasingly looking for cheaper organic options, and for the ability to buy everything they need for meals in one spot. And that’s where Costco, one of the biggest retailers of its kind in America, comes in.

Ranking as the second biggest retailer in America overall behind Wal-Mart Costco obviously has a leg up on the competition.

But they also deserve to be commended for committing to organics before most other large grocery and retail chains were willing to take the chance.

That commitment has been rewarded: Costco is now projected to sell over $4 billion in organic products this year according to this article by takepart.com, which trumps Whole Foods’ projected $3.6 billion and makes it the likely number one seller. The numbers were calculated by financial firm BMO Capital Markets.

The article mentioned that Costco has increased sales of organics by about $1 billion the past six months and is now going all in on that commitment, similar to the plans of other major store chains like Kroger (which was also expected to possibly surpass Whole Foods this year) and Target.

Wal-Mart also has invested heavily in organic food along with several other major retailers who have become worried about being left in the dust.

Organic Supply Catching Up with Demand?

Recent reports have noted that organic corn and other raw materials for food products have been in such short supply that U.S. companies have been forced to important them from countries like Romania to get them at a time when U.S. farmers still haven’t taken the hint and continue to grow GMOs.

“While the challenges in terms of supply are still out there, they’re becoming less formidable, because there are more organic suppliers and producers,” Richard Galanti, Costco’s vice president and CFO, said in a conference call with the analysts. “We’re working with them to commit more to it.”

Costco Offers Wide Organic Selection

Costco is a membership-based grocery store chain whose size dwarfs most other local retailers, with their immense influence and buying power combined with their commitment to organic, this seems like good news for shoppers, provided we also work to safeguard organic standards.

As organic becomes mainstream, more and more powerful interests will begin pushing for watered down standards, so it’s important to support our organic watchdog organizations as well as to buy organic (and especially from small, local organic farmers).

  1. I’ve been buying certain organic products from Costco for about ten years now. Most times I’m in the store I drop a note in their suggestion box that reads, “More organics, please.” I have shopped in Costcos all around the US and find that their organic offerings differ from place to place. Some organic products they have carried for years, others they have for awhile and then they’re gone, with new ones popping up all the time. Overall my impression is that Costco is trying to offer their members good value in organics while giving newly formed organic suppliers an introduction to a wider range of shoppers than they would have in Whole Foods. I continue to support Costco for this reason, but I also make sure to buy from and support our small, local HFS’s as well.

  2. Yeah the costco here ALWAYS plays games with the amazing flax they had for a while and I never seen any grass fed beef either. They seem to really enjoy the posionous prepared food vs really stocking what the costco members pay by their membership maybe someone should open a Health food costco
WHERE THERE IS NOTHING BUT WHOLESOME REAL FOOD NOT THE FAKE AND FROZEN !
(I am not shouting its just true!!)

  3. The link at the end of the article shows canned/packaged products that are organic. When I have shopped at Costco in person, I have not been able to find any fresh fruit or vegetables labeled as organic or non-GMO. I also haven’t seen organic grass fed beef, just grass fed beef.
