Prescription Drugs Are More Dangerous Than Street Drugs Like Heroin

drugAbusePrescription opioids are killing Americans at more than five times the rate that heroin is, according to the most recent numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Prescription painkillers are among the most abused narcotics in the United States.  These drugs are just as addictive and harmful as the hardest street drugs, but because they are legal and prescribed by doctors they are greatly underestimated by our society.  This is what makes these drugs so dangerous, since they are socially acceptable many people ignore or overlook their addiction until it becomes a serious problem.

In most cases when someone finally faces their problem they go right back to the doctor that got them hooked on the drugs in the first place to ask for help.  At that point they are usually just given different drugs, instead of a real solution.  This is seen in the popular but ineffective methadone and suboxone programs, which are responsible for keeping millions of addicts dependent on synthetic drugs.

Many of the drug programs in the United States are actually designed to keep people disempowered and dependent.  People fighting addiction are told that they are helpless and have a “disease” which they will suffer with for their entire lives, regardless of their ability to overcome their current habitual drug use.  This kind of rhetoric makes it more difficult for people to channel their will power and lays the foundation for future relapse.

People are taught from a very young age to over consume mass produced drugs at the slightest sign of physical or mental discomfort.  While the medication that is available on the market is typically far less effective than a healthy diet, exercise and natural remedies.  These options are never mentioned in mainstream circles because they would put the pharmaceutical monopoly in danger.  However, due to a growing public distrust of the industry, many people are taking a more holistic approach to their healthcare.

In 2010 a consumer reports study showed that a staggering 80% of patients felt that their doctors were so influenced by the drug industry that they would deliberately write a drug prescription even if a better, safer, non-drug option was available.
