A February of Profound Change

plutoHenry Seltzer – The astrology of February 2016 features Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, and Eris. Mercury is still recovering from its recent retrograde, through to the middle of the current month — which was also a particularly strong one. The astrology since the 21st of January has been dominated by Mercury’s dramatic station, just past, within a degree, the darkly transformative energies of tiny but powerful Pluto.

There were two exact conjunctions between them over the course of this lengthy ten-day period, when a stationing Mercury remained in close contact with Pluto, bringing to greater consciousness the potent nature of these extremely evolutionary times. In addition, just as Pluto’s square with Uranus is at its peak for this year, through to the end of February, a very close parallel between Pluto and Saturn within a few minutes of a degree also colors the situation, emblematic of the collapse and rebirth of structures both social and individual.

The Aquarius New Moon of February 8th is quite a doozy, being in exact semi-sextile to Venus, aspecting Uranus and Pluto in their square, and as well, Mars and Jupiter, Pluto being conjunct Venus. We have to include Saturn right along with Pluto, because of their close parallel aspect as Saturn moves toward semi-sextile with Pluto toward the end of the month. This makes for some very powerful medicine, and a greater degree of consciousness regarding what exactly we might be up to in these times of major change.

Because Chiron, the Wounded Healer, is implicated in this New Moon configuration, being in trine with Mars, opposed by Jupiter, and aspected by the New Moon In a close semi-sextile, we might look to ancient wounds within us for some of the reasons for resistance to change that we may feel. Although individually we have been making progress on our contemplated changes, there is likely still something remaining, some bridge that we have yet to cross, and we will learn more about these matters over the course of this crucially active month.

Jupiter is conjunct the nodal axis, in Virgo, and inconjunct to the new planet, Eris, indicating this month to be a fundamentally optimistic one as we contemplate taking direct and commanding action in support of soul intention. At the very same time, Saturn in close parallel with Pluto and in forming semi-sextile indicates that conservative approaches as well as these fundamentally optimistic ones vie for consideration; this could lead to either further polarizing, or to beneficial compromise that steers the middle course between extremes.

With the effects of Uranus and Pluto in their square remaining active through to the end of the decade, this is a pivotal year for the recognition of the need for drastic change, both personally and collectively. As individuals we can see more clearly the cumulative results of dysfunctional behaviors and begin to do something about them, while on the level of world-wide society itself, similar signals are mounting. Consciousness regarding the earth environment is rapidly rising as global warming is proving itself, as well as to the scientific logic of the actual physics of the situation, directly to our senses. This is merely one indication that the time has indeed come when habits must change on a global as well as on an individual level.

The new planet, Eris, very much featured in the February 8th New Moon, becomes even more emphasized this summer as she makes the first of several exact conjunctions with the revolutionary intuitional awareness of Uranus, signaling that individuality is further bursting out, away from previous conceptual limitations regarding what is possible. It will be an interesting year.
