Common Thyroid Disorders and What You Need To Know

thyroidDr. Edward F. Group – When most people think of the thyroid, the first thing that may come to mind is an image of a simple, obscure gland located somewhere in the neck. The thyroid is often seen as serving unknown functions as it is rarely discussed in popular press. Likewise, it’s not at all surprising that few understand its exact function and just how important it is to our overall health, wellness and vitality.

In this article we will briefly cover what the thyroid is and its functions, and discuss the 5 most common thyroid disorders today.

Thyroid Functions

The thyroid is an endocrine gland that produces and directs various hormones in the body. The health of the thyroid is paramount to overall well being, playing a vital role in cell growth, metabolism, and energy levels.

The thyroid produces two major primary hormones called triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). T3 is the more bio active version of the hormone, while T4 is considered the less active, storage form. Surprisingly, the thyroid outputs roughly 20 times more T4 than T3. Continue reading

Thyroid Disease Linked to Iodine Deficiency and Fluoridated Water

FluorideDr. Joseph Mercola – People who have moderate-to-severe iodine deficiencies and higher fluoride levels may be at an increased risk for underactive thyroid gland activity.

More than 66 percent of the U.S. population drinks water with added fluoride,[1] despite the fact that studies continue to question its safety and usefulness for its stated purpose: preventing cavities. A number of countries — including Germany, Sweden, Japan, the Netherlands, Finland and Israel — have already stopped this hazardous practice, but many Americans are still at risk.

In Canada, nearly 39 percent of the population also receives fluoridated drinking water (compared with only about 3 percent of Europeans).[2] It’s been known for years that fluoridated water consumption is linked to thyroid dysfunction and behavioral problems like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and two new studies have added to the already apparent associations.

“Life-changing” thyroid pill manufacturer spikes price by 5,000%

thyroidJhoanna Robinson – The National Health Service is eyeing the cessation of the incessant prescription of Liothyronine, a drug that is used to treat thyroid disorders, after its manufacturer, Oakville, Canada-based pharmaceutical company Concordia International, increased its retail price by 5,662 percent to 9.22 British pounds from 16 p per tablet.

Liothyronine is used to treat hypothyroidism or under-active thyroid, which affects 15 in every 1,000 women and one in every 1,000 men in the United Kingdom. Hypothyroidism is characterized by a poor ability to tolerate cold, constipation, a feeling of tiredness, depression, and weight gain.

An under-active thyroid means your thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormone, and can be caused by many things, including lifestyle. In more severe cases, it can occur when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland and damages it, or when the thyroid sustains damage that was caused by treatments for an overactive thyroid or thyroid cancer.

As there is only one supplier of Liothyronine, patients could be forced to go all the way to Europe, where a packet costs only around a few euros. Continue reading

Reasons Your Thyroid Medication Isn’t Working

Jen Wittman – While there is no “magic pill” for thyroid disease, some factors may influence the effectiveness of your thyroid medication.

thyroidWhen you are first diagnosed with a thyroid condition, a prescription for medication becomes much like a prescription for hope.

There is hope that you and your body will once again work together as partners, that you can feel “normal” again…at least someday soon. There is a butterflies-in-the-belly kind of optimism that all will be well again and that the emotional lows will become poignant highs.

And then it happens: You grow frustrated as you and your doctor struggle to find the right dosage and the right type of thyroid medication. You slowly realize that your thyroid medication doesn’t do all you thought it would.  It may not have taken your symptoms away and possibly added some extra ones to the mix. Continue reading

Top 6 Ways to Heal Thyroid Disease

Discover protocols that could lead you into thyroid disease remission.

thyroidDr. Izabella Wentz, Pharm D – I didn’t always want to be a thyroid pharmacist!  In fact, I didn’t have much interest in the thyroid until my own thyroid diagnosis in 2009. This diagnosis came after almost a decade of some pretty life-altering symptoms. I was so fatigued I had to sleep for 12 hours each night just to feel human. My sharp mind that kept me on the honor roll during my doctorate program studies was not so sharp anymore! I began to have brain fog and started being forgetful… and then there was the intense anxiety…

I remember levels of anxiety so bizarre that my husband couldn’t go for a jog without me thinking he’d been hit by a car or left with some woman!

I was in pain pretty much everyday, and I ended up being diagnosed with carpal tunnel in both arms. I wore braces on my arms and eventually had to resign from my job because it involved too much computer time. I had irritable bowel syndrome and acid reflux and went to so many doctors, I felt like I had more doctors visits than visits with friends! Continue reading
