All About Different Kinds of Addiction Rehab

addictionAddiction rehab comes in many shapes and forms, and what works for some may not always work for another. Drugs affect everyone differently, so it makes sense that the way each individuals addiction can be handled would vary greatly from person to person. Addiction is something that plagues many people around the globe on a daily basis. Unfortunately, many people never see life on the other side of addiction because they never seek any help to recover from it.

Addiction rehab therapy programs and facilities are a great way for people with substance abuse issues to get the help they need. These programs often offer a range of services from detox to ongoing support and accountability for those who have completed their programs to avoid their clients relapsing and finding themselves in dire circumstances.

There are many different forms of addiction rehab treatment ranging from 24-hour detox facilities all the way to multi-year transitional homes. Depending on the resources available, and individual needs of each specific case, people who are addicted to drugs may find themselves in any one of these programs once, or even many times before they are living a sober and healthy life.

Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, addiction rehab facilities cost a good deal of money for people to attend, and that can make getting help very difficult for people who are actively seeking help but are low on funds. After all, not many people value the life of an addict unless they are their friend or their relative.

Unless an addict is lucky enough to have someone who will put forth the cash for their rehab stay, or unless there are funding programs available in their area, it is not an option for them and they must try to fight their battle with drugs alone. The government often overlooks the importance of funded rehab facilities and allocate their resources towards other things, but there are some communities with privately funded rehab facilities and it is well worth looking into in your area to see if funding is available.

Detox / Medical Withdrawal

Depending on what kind of addiction we’re talking about, most addiction rehabs start with detox or medically managed withdrawal, as many substances will cause physical withdrawals for the person who is trying to get off of drugs or alcohol.

Detox centers help to ensure that people can ‘come down’ off of drugs safely, and provide a safe space for them to stay while doing so so they are less likely to go out and seek more of their substance of choice in order to make the symptoms stop. Withdrawal symptoms are often the biggest reason that an addict starts using again right away, often as a way to cope with the physical symptoms or to make them go away.

For users of large amounts of heavy drugs, a medical withdrawal may be the best and safest way for them to get sober. With people who use hard drugs in large amounts, their body cannot function without them. This is where doctors can step in and help people to get off of heavy drugs by giving them medication that will limit the potentially fatal withdrawal effects on their bodies. This can help to ease the transition and ensure a higher level of success moving forward with treatment options.

In Patient Programs and Facilities

Essentially an inpatient treatment program is a place where people who are trying to kick a drug habit go to receive detox and counselling services to help them cope with the early phases of kicking a drug habit. The programs at these facilities are usually tailored to the individual by a designated doctor and psychiatrist team. Together they come up with a plan which will give the addicted person the best chance at a full recovery.

Often times this will entail the person participating in groups which will focus on coping skills to deal with cravings when they arise. Many people go into an addiction rehab treatment assuming that once they complete the program they will no longer have the craving to use. This is a big part of why recovering addicts sometimes relapse a time or two, they don’t expect the cravings to resurface. A large part of inpatient treatments is learning how to cope with cravings and negative feelings without using drugs and substances as an escape.

Outpatient Programs and Halfway Houses

The next step after an inpatient treatment program is an outpatient addiction rehab facility or a halfway house. These two programs are where recovering addicts can go to find sponsor- type people to help keep them accountable for their actions and redirect them away from drug use when they feel the urge.

Something that anybody considering a life of sobriety should remember is that cravings don’t just go away when you decide to get sober. It takes work and time to maintain a sober mind and body at first. The first few weeks after completing treatment are always the hardest because your body and mind will try to go back to old and unhealthy coping mechanisms such as using drugs or drinking alcohol. That is where these outpatient addiction rehab therapies can come into play. They offer ongoing support for recovering addicts when they are struggling to stay clean.

Halfway houses are homes where people in recovery can live and get their lives back in order after addiction. They allow them to still have that ongoing support but also encourage them to get out and get a job and go to social functions. Halfway houses and outpatient addiction rehab options are a helpful stepping stone towards a life of sobriety.

Addiction rehab programs can be a literal lifesaver for thousands of people around the world. With a variety of programs available to recovering drug addicts, there is a much higher chance that those who do reach out can sustain their sobriety and go on to live a healthy and happy life without drugs.
