How to do Wonders with a Little Land

Even if you only have a small piece of land you can achieve high yields based on how you plan and utilize the available space. A small garden can provide high yields when you embrace some of the new cultivation techniques  associated with planting and harvesting crops using vertical space.

Embrace Vertical Gardening

Vertical gardening allows you to maximize space in a small garden. Among the numerous benefits you gain increased yields, visual interest, and controlled pest management. A properly designed vertical garden can create a beautiful privacy fence between you and your neighbors.

Another advantage of planting vertically is a reduction of leaf fungus and generalized rot due to the improved circulation of air around plants.  It also helps with reduction of moisture buildup that can lead to fruit rotting rather than ripening for harvest. One of the greatest overall benefits is the appreciable reduction in water consumption required to maintain healthy vegetation.

Pick Dwarf Varieties

Virtually all known fruit trees have a dwarf version which can be planted in small yards and harvested for fresh fruit.  When choosing fruit trees be sure to get two of each variety as most plants benefit from cross pollination. Some adverts claim that the tree can self pollinate. However, plants always seem to do better when there is more than one plant to help the pollination process.

Use Soil Real Estate

This is basically taking advantage of all available soil. There are many techniques you could apply to make the process a success. For example, if you have larger trees available you can plant crops that survive in shady conditions instead of leaving this space empty. Some plants that do well in shade include onions, radishes, garlic, and herbs. You could also try the Tree Sisters technique, one in which you plant different plant varieties together to ensure crop gains from plant associations with each other.

Fertilize

Soil nutrients are exceedingly important. Be aware that soil fertility varies from place to place, possibly even on your tiny plot of land.  Adding fertilizer to reasonably good soil rejuvenates it and ensures you get high yield. Your primary concern will be maintaining the proper soil PH levels. You can learn a great deal about creating and maintaining soil fertility and PH levels from Eco Peanut.

So yes! Even with a little plot of land you can do wonders and get high yields. All you need do is explore creative methods of farming to help you maximize output.
