These facts may make you think twice about your sugar intake

sugarVineetha Reddy – If you believe that the only way sugar makes its way into your system is through desserts and drinks, you might want to think again. Sugar is literally everywhere! And no, I’m not kidding. From your favorite salad dressing to the so-called healthy low-fat yogurt, from canned fruits to sports drinks, everything has some amount of added sugar. When consumed in large quantities, these foods can cause serious harm and lead to many diseases.

No doubt, the natural form of sugar, present in the form of fructose and lactose in fruits and vegetables, is less harmful. It is the added sugar (for flavors and textures) that is your true enemy. We all end up consuming so many empty calories, which can be easily avoided. An average person intakes anywhere between 300 to 700 calories only from added sugars. Whoa!

Now, for the facts. Here are 5 things that artificial sugar does to your body, and these are good enough reasons for you to take a step back and reconsider.

Sugar can cause obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure

Yes, sugar causes all these and many other related diseases. Sugar, being a carbohydrate, is converted into fat in the body. It elevates insulin and leptin resistance and affects the blood sugar levels in the body. This, in turn, leads to sugar cravings. And thus, the cycle continues. This eventually leads to obesity. And obesity, in turn, is the major cause of high blood pressure.

Heart and cardiovascular diseases

Our heart already has a lot to do. And we increase its job by consuming sugar. Sugar intake might make you fat and lead to diabetes and high blood pressure. High blood pressure can affect the circulatory system and, in the long run, can lead to heart diseases, stroke, kidney damage, and other coronary diseases.

No vitamins or minerals

The industrially refined sugar lacks in minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium, etc. Sugar does not really pass on anything else to your body except catering to your sweet tooth. It is just empty calories. Moreover, products that have added sugar are low in nutrients. Bottom line: Stop eating sugar!

Sugar also leads to high cholesterol

No, I’m not talking about HDL or the good cholesterol. I’m talking about LDL or the bad cholesterol. Sugar consumption increases the levels of blood fats or triglycerides. High levels of LDL and triglycerides lead to severe heart diseases as they clog the arteries and affect the circulatory system.

Sugar is to be blamed for those sleepless nights and hazy memory

Sugar triggers the release of a hormone called cortisol that disturbs our sleep patterns. We feel sluggish and might even need to take small naps several times a day. This could lead to irritability, mood swings, and anxiety. To add to all this, sugar also hinders the memory power of the brain. Sugar may lead to a reduction in the production of a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Lack of this chemical results in difficulties in forming new memories and remembering the old ones.

To sum it all up, no sugar means a better figure, better sleep, better skin, better overall health, and the list goes on. There are plenty of foods that are sugar-free and way healthier. Although these are good enough reasons to give your daily diet another thought and skip the sugars, there are many other good things that will happen to your body. So, start today!

  1. I learned from a trusted source that white sugar puts holes in your etheric structure, so I gave up all white sugar and its derivatives about 5 years ago. One benefit was that my teeth stopped deteriorating! And before that I ate only very small amounts of sugar.
Now I sweeten things with raw honey, maple syrup, stevia, or birch sweetener.

    1. Thanks for sharing your info re sugar. I can’t help but wonder if sugar in its raw state is as good as maple syrup or honey in their raw (unprocessed) states. It seems to me that it is the PROCESS that produces harm moreso than SUGAR CANE. -g
