Healthy Meal Plan: Really good, or really scary?

meal planYou’ve heard about them and you’ve probably seen advertising about them, but if you’re anything like the rest of the world, you’re also likely a little afraid of them.

Most of us don’t have much time to stop and think about what a Healthy Meal Plan is, but not knowing is kind of worse, isn’t it?

The first thought that comes to mind is of some dark creature who’s going to look over our shoulder for the rest of our lives and shout down anything we look at in the fridge or at a fast food joint!

It’s common to think of meal plans that way today. We know we should eat healthier, but we don’t want to make enormous sacrifices in what we consume. So, enter the Meal Plan and all of our misconceptions about it.

It’s time to dispel some of the myths around what a meal plan is and what a healthy meal plan is.

First of all, you’re on a meal plan today, even if you don’t think about it. Now some of the scary is already leaving, isn’t it? A meal plan is just another way of describing what you eat from day to day. Everyone has a meal plan because everyone has to eat, and it usually follows some form of routine.

That’s your basic meal plan, the difference is that most people don’t follow a healthy one. Getting that breakfast sandwich on the way to work? Not very healthy. Ordering lunch in during that board meeting because you just don’t have the time? Also, not very healthy. Getting a pizza for you and the kids after a long day at the office? Guess what? Not very healthy, either. You may feel like you’re the only one who does this, but the truth is that many people do, largely due to time constraints.

There aren’t very many people who have a lot of time in the morning. Most would rather sacrifice breakfast at home for an extra fifteen minutes in bed. All those fast food joints offering a breakfast sandwich and coffee in the morning wouldn’t be there if this wasn’t true.

The same goes for lunch. Many folk would rather pick up lunch from somewhere quick and fast on their lunch break rather than pack a lunch and bring it in. Why? Because people don’t want to do that on their evenings after work! So, making and packing a lunch the night before seems like work. As a result, we’re taking our lunch at a fast food restaurant much of the time and absorbing a lot of calories.

The reason for going about supper the wrong way is simply because many tired are after the commute to work, a hectic day at our place of employment, and then that long, arduous commute home. Who has the energy to make a meal after that? The problem is that, once again, you’re absorbing a lot of empty calories.

This is where the importance of healthy meal planning comes into effect. You don’t need to think of this as the end of your days of fun, it’s simply realizing where you can make some changes to improve your diet, without losing the freedom to make your own choices.

One thing that can seem intimidating is the prospect of creating a healthy meal plan. Where do you start? What do you include and what do you exclude? The best way to approach this is the same way as one would approach the building of a house. Don’t think of the entire project, just start with pouring the foundation and then move on to the next job!

In this case, the best resource you have to building a healthy eating plan is right at your fingertips: the Internet. There are dozens of websites that are dedicated to guiding you through those first steps towards building a proper plan. The most important thing to remember about this, of course, is that you’re building a plan for yourself, not others. Never approach a plan as a list of what you should eat. Approach it as a plan of what you’re actually going to eat. Creating a plan that’s full of foods that you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot-pole defeats the purpose of a meal plan. Again, it’s your plan, not someone else’s.

Don’t want to do it all by yourself? Not a problem, either. There are many services out there who will work with you on what you want in your meal plan and then they’ll do all the work for you! In the end, there’s nothing frightening about a meal plan, once you begin to understand it.

And, that’s a great start.
