Human Trafficking: What Are the Top 3 States for Frequency?

human traffickingAs you might expect, lawyers for sex crimes are working at the sharp end of what is a very emotive and difficult scenario and some places have a far worse reputation for human trafficking than others.

In every single respect, human trafficking is a very serious aspect of criminal activity, and exploiting people for sex is far more common than you would have hoped in the United States.

It is actually quite a widely-held misconception that human trafficking is not something that goes on in such a developed country as the US but the statistics tell a different story, with three states claiming an unwanted position as the places where this crime is most prevalent.

No such thing as a typical victim

The first thing to say is that human trafficking is happening across all genders and ages. Race or religious background are not discriminatory aspects that mark someone out as being more likely to be trafficked either.

Anyone can be a victim of human trafficking and the only constant amongst the data is that women tend to be trafficked for sexual exploitation and men for forced labor purposes.

Data gathered by the Bureau of Justice estimates that about 200,000 trafficking incidents occur across the United States every year. For a country where many people think it doesn’t happen at all, that is a lot of victims, and there could be many more that go unreported or detected.

California tops the list

The so-called sunshine state has the dubious distinction of consistently being a hotspot for trafficking and it regularly tops the list each year.

As you will see from the figures, California reported 1507 human trafficking cases in the latest data, which is much higher than many other states. Victims of trafficking are predominantly female and they were mainly trafficked to work in illegal massage and spa businesses.

Texas is next on the list

The state of Texas reported 1,080 cases of trafficking in the latest published figures and the rate of trafficking is shown as being 3.63 people per 100K.

Florida comes third

The state of Florida had 896 reported cases of trafficking in the latest set of figures and that means that just over 4 people per 100K are likely to be trafficked.

The United States has a surprising problem

It is quite likely that if you asked someone to name a country with one of the worst human trafficking problems in the world the United States would not be the first one to be named.

It is actually a global trafficking hotspot and a major issue is that so many victims don’t come forward to seek help because of the fear of reprisals or language barrier problems. Although we have highlighted the three worst states, the issue of trafficking is actually widespread and spans the country.

The total number of trafficking victims will probably never be known but it is clear that the US has a bigger problem than many people realize.

Reporting potential victims to law enforcement agencies and getting professional legal guidance can help reduce the prospect of
