According to statistics, the amount of coffee drinkers is on the rise, hitting its highest level in six years. The National Coffee Association has determined through its own survey that a whopping 64% of Americans enjoy at least one cup of coffee each day. If you’re included in that statistic of coffee drinkers, then there is also a large chance that you’re drinking more than one cup of Joe a day. Over time, it becomes a habit and can become your drink of choice.

So, what’s wrong with drinking a lot of coffee, besides the financial aspect if you’re the type that opts for the fancy coffee shop brews? Well, too much coffee is actually harmful to your health, as it has to do with too much caffeine. If you hit the point of too much caffeine, you can start to feel anxious, nervous, or jittery, and it can cause stomach aches, a fast heart rate, bad sleeping habits, loose bowel movements, and headaches.

So how about replacing that coffee with something that is better for your mind and body? ‘What are these better options?’ you ask – here’s a list of three of them.

Lemon Water

If it has become your standard morning practice to get up, head to the kitchen, and brew a hot cup of coffee, you may want to try lemon water in the morning instead. Lemon water provides you with an excellent source of vitamin C, which will help give you the energy you need to start your day. Vitamin C helps to strengthen your immune system, it is an antioxidant, plus it even helps to protect your skin from harmful sun damage.

Obviously, this beverage is free of caffeine, so you won’t have to worry about any of the negative side effects of it. As for the proper ratio, you want to use 1 tbsp or one half of a freshly squeezed lemon and add it to one cup of cold water. If you start to get bored of the flavor, you can always add other items to the water such as basil, mint, cucumber, or watermelon.

Matcha Tea

One of the biggest trends right now in hot beverages is the growing number of people who are reaching for matcha tea, which is a form of green tea. What happens is the tea leaves are steamed, dried, and then ground into a very fine powder. This means you get the benefits of the whole leaf, which includes a huge boost of antioxidants.

Now, matcha does have caffeine in it, which can help you with that morning jolt of energy. But where it has a leg-up on coffee is that it also contains L-Theanine, which helps boost a person’s mental awareness without crashing shortly after.

A big debate has many asking which is better between Yerba Mate vs Matcha. The big difference lies in taste. Yerba mate has an astringent taste to it, so it’s not one that everyone can handle. Yerba mate also isn’t very versatile in how you prepare or drink it.

Chai Tea

Then we have chai tea, which can be another replacement for coffee. Chai tea has a very strong flavor thanks to the spices and herbs used in it, and it is a type of black tea. It measures lower in caffeine content than coffee, but since it still contains some caffeine, you’ll still see a boost in your mental alertness.

Kick the Habit for Good

So, the next time you start craving that cup of coffee, you may want to reach for one of these healthier options instead, and kick your coffee habit for good.
