Declutter Your House

Decluttering your house doesn’t have to be a big and stressful event. Nor does it need to be too time-consuming. Many people tend to declutter their houses when they do big spring cleaning sessions, however, you needn’t wait until spring to organize your life.

Research shows that clutter can contribute to feelings of stress, anxiety, guilt, and frustration. It is also thought that clutter in your home can make you chronically late.

How annoying is it when you can’t find your shoes or keys right before you need to leave for an important meeting? Very.

However, if you organized your home and got rid of items that were taking up space, you’d be able to find things much more easily. Decluttering your house can also help make you feel more peaceful and can reduce your stress levels.

With a bit of planning, the right tools, and a can-do mindset, you should be able to follow our guide on how to declutter fast and have a clean and organized house in one day.

How to Declutter Your Home

The best way to start decluttering your home is by starting one room at a time. It can also be helpful to understand the three basic principles of having a clutter-free home.

The first principle is getting rid of stuff and things you don’t need. The second principle is to have easy access to your things. And the third principle is to keep everything in its place.

Step 1: Get Rid of Stuff You Don’t Need

The first thing you need to do when entering a room that you’re decluttering is sort out everything that you can get rid of.

You’ll want to get rid of obvious trash, so have a bin bag for this. You might also want to get rid of things that you no longer use or need. Check the quality of your items and consider recycling or giving them to a charity. Some people even sell things they no longer need online and make money from them.

Step 2: Have Everything Where You Want It

Once you’ve followed step 1 in our how to declutter quickly guide, you can move onto step 2. Your house might have clutter in one room that belongs to another.

For example, you might have toys in the dining room; make sure you move these to the room where they are supposed to be before you get to work with the finer clutter details.

Step 3: Sort Your Rooms

Once you’ve got rid of some clutter, you can start getting down to the nitty-gritty parts. Organizing your space can be very time-consuming, but it will also free up space and make you feel better for doing it.

Start by looking in cupboards and drawers and go through everything in them. Make split piles of your possessions, leaving a pile for things you want to keep, a pile for things you want to throw away, and a pile for things you can donate.

Don’t forget to look around your rooms for other clutter. For example, in the living room, you might have a collection of old magazines and newspapers that you need to throw away.

Step 4: Organize Your Rooms

Once you’ve decided what is staying and what is going, you should be able to re-organize your cupboards and drawers. Try to come up with a system so that you know where everything is.

For example, you might want to allocate a shelf for books, a shelf for board games, and a different shelf for media/entertainment like DVDs and CDs.

This system will help you keep your house decluttered and will come in handy when you’re trying to find something later on.

Step 5: Deal With the Clutter

Once you’ve bagged up all the clutter you want to get rid of, make sure you deal with it as soon as possible. Many people tend to leave their items lying in bags for days or weeks, however, just bagging up your clutter doesn’t deal with it.

If you’ve decided to take x amount of bags to the dump then allocate a day that you’re able to do this. If you’ve decided to donate the items that you no longer need then also make sure you decide on a day when you can take them to a charity shop.

How Else Can I Store My Possessions?

You might have some possessions that are cluttering your house but that you don’t want to part with. For example, family heirlooms which have been given to you by a late relative.

If this is the case, then you might want to consider storing them in a space out of the way, such as a basement or garage. If you don’t have anywhere to put the possessions you want to keep, then you might consider getting a storage unit.

Storage units are great for storing your possessions if you don’t want them in your house but want to keep them. Many people are wary about keeping their possessions away from home in fear that they might be stolen. However, many storage units are very secure and even offer storage unit insurance that can cover the cost of your possessions if anything were to happen to them.
