Staying in shape mentally is as important as staying in shape physically

e-counselingIt’s as important to stay in shape mentally as it is to stay in shape physically. Despite knowing this, we often fail to pay attention on our mental health until things get out of control.

We’re all aware that it’s possible to take care of our physical health by staying active, eating well and by doing the right kind of exercise. But as far as  mental health is concerned, we put very little focus on the choices we make concerning mental health. Fortunately some good options still exist.

Find out what gives you joy

A professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina says you need to find what keeps you alive, the things that bring you a sense of peace, joy and curiosity. You should learn to prioritize these activities. You nurture positivity by breaking down all sorts of bad habits and by establishing new habits. Be open, appreciative, curious and kind. More than anything else, Be Real!

Tips to stay mentally healthy

1- Give greater priority to people than things. Spend more time with family and friends so that you can nurture strong relations

2- Success shouldn’t be measured by what you possess or by what you earn

3- Stay authentic and concentrate on activities you believe in – a project, hobby or a specific cause

4- Set challenges and make sure your goals are achievable (whether long term or short term)

5- Celebrate your wins and give yourself rewards for winning

6- Volunteer for tasks you’re comfortable doing. Just do something to make someone else happy. Studies show that volunteering has direct links to mental well-being

7- Research online resources to learn something new

8- Exercise! Do some type of workout daily. There are scientific studies that prove individuals generally feel better when they engage in physical activity

9- Treat yourself with compassion, especially when things don’t go as planned

10- At the end of each day make a list of at least 3 things for which you’re grateful or that worked out positively for you.
