Unpacking the Charges Against Trump: Where’s The Crime?

Unpacking the Charges Against Trump: Where's The Crime?Jonathan Turley – For many of us in the legal community, the case of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg against former president Donald Trump borders on the legally obscene: an openly political prosecution based on a theory that even some liberal pundits have dismissed. Yet, this week the prosecution seemed like they were actually making a case for obscenity.

No, it was not the gratuitous introduction of an uncharged alleged tryst with a former Playboy bunny or planned details on the relationship with a former porn star. It was the criminal theory itself that seemed crafted around the standard for obscenity famously described by Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart in the case of Jacobellis v. Ohio, 378 U.S. 184 (1964): “I shall not today attempt further to define [it] … But I know it when I see it.” Continue reading

A Country Descending into Madness

A Country Descending into MadnessJ. B. Shurk – This is what it looks like when a country descends into madness.  Two standards of “justice” preclude any justice at all.

Hillary Clinton kept top-secret information on a home-brew private server that was infiltrated by malicious foreign actors, and she suffered no legal consequence — even after having destroyed Blackberry devices and other subpoenaed evidence of criminal culpability.  President Trump keeps personally declassified documents in his home, and the FBI sends a SWAT team into Mar-a-Lago so that Merrick Garland’s goons can throw Trump in prison. The Roller Coaster of America’s Future: a Terrifying Plunge

The Roller Coaster of America's Future: a Terrifying PlungeJ. B. Shurk – Life right now feels like that moment when your roller coaster car begins slowing down near a terrifying peak, and your line of sight finally captures the precipitous plunge lying ahead. Americans know that what happens next won’t be enjoyable except in that perverse way when abject terror floods the body with adrenaline.

Majorities or near-majorities expect imminent economic disaster, global war against nuclear-armed foes, and civil war here at home. If that’s “progress,” then it’s long past time to turn the country around. Yet that’s the thing with roller coaster rides: even if we hit the brakes now before cresting the summit, our downward acceleration is guaranteed — in one direction or another. Continue reading

FTX and the Corruption of America

FTX and the Corruption of AmericaCharles Hugh Smith – Thanks to the FTX swindle, we now know the cost of a get out of jail free card in America: $40 million, paid to political elites. It seems even get out of jail free cards have suffered from inflation.

With hefty “donations” (heh) to elites, all wrong-doing is swept under a very capacious carpet. Jeffrey Epstein sprinkled a few million on the elites of Harvard, and he was ushered into this elite circle as an intimate pal. The fact that he was a rapacious predator of children was of no concern. A few million showered on the right people and causes makes evil and criminality disappear. Continue reading
