The Little Things

The Little ThingsDavid R. Hamilton, Ph.D. – You know, when you zoom out and look at life, it’s easy to get caught up in the big stuff. Major milestones, huge decisions, the big “aha!” moments.

I’ve been thinking about this recently as I’ve been working on my next book. I found myself reflecting on the day my first book was published.

While the actual publication itself was exciting, there were millions of moments before it. Writing in the middle of the night (for a while it was the only time I could find), how my partner and my family supported me writing it, the feedback I received from friends in my early drafts, the days spent editing, the highs and lows, rejections from publishers, writing in coffee shops, writing in the park when it was sunny, and much more. Moments of Contentment

Moments of ContentmentThe Angels – If you were to watch a kitty sitting in a sunny spot in the house, a dog taking a nap near a family gathering, or a child playing with something that has captured their full attention, you would witness moments of complete and utter contentment. You would see souls entirely centered in the here and now, appreciating where they are and who is around them. Watching them, you too might sink into a delicious state of contentment, where – if for only a few moments – all is right with your world. Continue reading

Reverse Engineering Contentment

contentmentCheryl Richardson – I’ve just come in from a run through our neighborhood on this beautiful, spring morning. We’ve had rain here all week, which we really needed, and it’s good to have the sun back for a visit.

Working on Yourself Doesn’t Work – Being Here Does.

The moment we stopped working on ourselves to get “better”, our lives instantaneously transformed. This has profoundly impacted everything. What we have learned is not to take ourselves so seriously and to not work so hard to get somewhere.

We have been raised in a forward-thinking culture where we have learned that something in the future will produce the sense of well-being or “OKness” that we all strive to achieve.

It is this very striving, we’ve discovered, that produces dissatisfaction. The constant need to achieve what we think is better than what we have in the current moment stresses our being in an endless cycle of pain.

We have been taught that certain goals once achieved will produce happiness and satisfaction. This is not true. Happiness is not circumstantially determined and well-being is not a function of the circumstances of your life, either.

All happiness and satisfaction happens when you are being in the current moment of your life. This moment of now is all there is. Something in the future will not get here until it does, and when it does, it will occur in a moment of now.

The Moment is Perfect.

Life shows up exactly as it does in each moment. It rarely, if ever, shows up to meet our preferences. So if meeting your preferences determines your well-being, then chances are you will never feel well in yourself, even if you meet your goals.
