Nearly 70 percent of Americans take prescribed medication daily, a recent Mayo Clinic study found. If this isn’t already bad enough, the pharmaceutical industry has such a vice-like grip on consumers such that nearly one in four Americans can’t afford to fill out their prescriptions. Drug pricing is a growing problem and warrants a closer look and possible solutions. We explore some of these below.
1. Drug Pricing
A majority of European countries have policies that allow governments (or relevant state agencies) to negotiate prices for every drug in the market. In the United States, however, relevant agencies such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services are prohibited by law from negotiating drug prices. In an attempt to curb the mass rush for food change and reform, psychiatry has green lighted a public relations push to spread awareness about their new buzzword “orthorexia nervosa,” defined as “a pathological obsession for biologically pure and healthy nutrition.” In other words, experts are moving toward saying that our demand for nutrient-dense, healthful food is a mental disorder that must be treated.
What happens when the ‘Average Joe’ gets caught committing a crime? He or she usually gets the book thrown at them, most often spending time in the slammer. However, what happens when “corporations too big to fail” get caught with “their hands in the cookie jar,” so to speak? Not very many folks pay the time, but the corporate treasury pays the fine. Why? Apparently, large sums of money can “absolve corporate sins” time after time after time. One industry that has had enormous fines levied against it is the pharmaceutical industry, also known as Big Pharma.
