Russian Planes Evacuate Over 300 People From War-Torn Yemen

Two Russian planes have evacuated over 300 people, including Russians and foreign citizens from Yemen, as thousands of foreign nationals are struggling to leave the conflict-ridden country.

Two planes flew out of the Yemeni capital Sanaa, with each aircraft carrying about 150 passengers. The airplanes are firstly heading to Cairo, before carrying onto Moscow, which will be their final destination, RT’s Paula Slier reports. One of the planes has already touched down in the Egyptian capital and is already bound for Moscow.

“The entire journey took around 13 hours in total,” Slier said, who was aboard one of the planes with those being evacuated. “It was a very organized evacuation. People have come from early in the morning, in fact, some of them were waiting since yesterday.” Continue reading →

Another Week, Another War: The Iron Logic Of America’s Middle East Madness

Chris Floyd – Another week, another war. And yet another American alliance with the forces of Islamic extremism. Washington is clearly the guiding force between the Saudi-led invasion of Yemen — a move that will almost certainly lead to a protracted and ruinous conflict, spilling over many warborders and, as usual, creating fertile ground for more extremism. In other words, America’s war profiteers and military imperialists have given themselves another rich seam of loot and power. And in Yemen, as in Syria, the Yanks are fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with their old allies, al Qaeda, once again.

As usual, some of the best analysis of the latest berserk spasm of Potomac fever comes from the redoubtable As’ad AbuKhalil, the “Angry Arab.” Here’s an excerpt from one of his trenchant observations of the situation:

This war is also an American war: it is a gift from the US to the GCC countries who didn’t like US policies in Egypt, Syria, and Yemen.  The Saudi regime is now pursuing the Israeli option: that it will now be more clearly aligned with the Israeli interests in the region and that it will also be aggressive and violent in pursuing regime interests. … On every issue in Arab politics, the Saudi regime is aligned with Israel. US Congressman offers scathing look at US drone program, covert wars

The U.S. drone assassination program is “vigilantism conducted by robots” and has caused us to “journey into moral depravity,” said Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) in an interview with The Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

In the June 21 interview with the London-based Bureau, Kucinich gives a scathing review of the U.S. wars in Yemen and Pakistan and states that the nation’s justice values have been “radically altered” and that we now have a system of trial by execution.

“We have ventured into a world since 9/11 where international law is set aside and where the implements of war are becoming so ubiquitous that all the rules are being ignored and conflict zones are expanding. Where suspected terrorists – and we do not know what they are really suspected of doing, you know – they can be suspects now, and they can be executed. Or they can just be perceived to be a male of combat age and be executed.”

Kucinich remarks how the power of Congress to declare war has now morphed into “the derogation to the executive of the power to strike at any nation at any time for any reason.”

On the covert, escalating war in Yemen, including drone strikes, Kucinich bluntly states, “We understand that we are at war in Yemen.”

The congressman emphasized that the U.S. drone program represents a bastardization of justice:  “What we have done here with the drone program is to radically alter our system of justice. Because, remember, if the whole idea is that we are exporting American values, those drones represent American values. And now we are telling the world that American values are summary executions, no rights to an accused, no arrest process, no reading of charges, no trial by jury, no judge, only an executioner.”

And by having such an assassination program without legal justification, we “journeyed into moral depravity,” Kucinich stated.
