What effect does sleep have on productivity?

If you’re wondering about the actual impact of a good night’s sleep on productivity, or the amount of sleep needed for general health we’re gathered some research and published it below.

How much sleep do you really need per night?

sleepThe typical answer is 8 hours per night. However, according to an article in Psychology Today, there are no studies that prove 8 hours/night sleep is effective. In fact, it’s been discovered that most people without sleep disorders sleep an average of 6 to 7 hours per night.

Sleep disorders can consist of any of the following:

♦ Snoring

♦ Insomnia

♦ Sleep apnea

♦ Restless leg syndrome

♦ Chronic fatigue disorder

♦ Narcolepsy

How to sleep well and live longer

Even if you suffer from any of the disorders listed above you can develop new habits that lead to better sleep. Of course you will have to give your body time to adjust to changes in your daily routine.

For example, if you typically go to bed around 1-2 a.m. and decide to shift to 10 p.m. you likely won’t be able to fall asleep rapidly. Why? Your inner biological clock is set to the later time frame and requires reprogramming to adjust to an earlier time frame. It will take patience and consistency to shift from one sleep cycle to a longer, healthier one.

Other important changes you can implement to help with shifting your biological clock to a longer sleep cycle include the following:

♦ Exercise daily, especially early in the morning. This will get your blood flowing and will give you lots of energy.

♦ Don’t nap during the day.

♦ Allow the natural morning light to wake you up instead of setting an alarm

♦ Don’t eat heavy foods right before bed or very late at night.

♦ Create a routine and stick to it.

♦ Turn a blue light filter on your phone or iPad and/or stop using electronic devices close to bed time.

♦ Create a conducive sleeping environment in your bedroom – Blackout curtains, clean sheets, good mattress and proper room temperature are just a few.

♦ Avoid having caffeine after 5-6 pm.

How CBD Oil can improve you sleep

According to this study, CBD Oil can help you sleep better, especially if you suffer from insomnia or sleep apnea.

CBD is made from the cannabis plant. The main compounds are extracted and made into an oil. It has lots of health benefits that include treating anxiety, chronic pain, and sleep disorders. You should also know that the CBD doesn’t make you “high”, as marijuana does for instance.

Studies have shown that the use of CBD oil is a major treatment for insomnia, one that prevents you from feeling groggy or sleepy during the day.

Here’s a list of benefits derived from CBD oil:

♦ Treats anxiety and depression

♦ Helps with epilepsy

♦ Pain relief

♦ It has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities which can help protect the brain

♦ Treats other substance addictions (nicotine, cocaine, etc)

♦ Treatment some types of cancer

The importance of sleep for a more productive life.

Does the amount of sleep you get affect your health? YES! Sleepless nights accumulate over time and cause you to be inefficient rather than productive.

There are those who claim that “sleep isn’t important” or “I don’t have time to sleep, I’ve got work to do!”  Well, the truth is research on sleep and productivity shows that poor sleep has a negative effect on both life enjoyment and productivity. This is because a lack of sleep  accumulates over time and your body and cognitive functions start to suffer.

What happens if you sleep less than recommended?

If you sleep for only 5 hours you may seem fresh, attentive and productive. You’ll be able to do the exact same things and deliver equivalent results. But, the truth is your brain will suffer. You will be sleep deprived and will lose focus over time.

What happens if you sleep more than it’s recommended?

According to researchers, oversleeping comes with quite a few risks too. Particularly on your health.

Why do people oversleep:

♦ hypersomnia (medical disorder)

♦ Use of substances such as alcohol, drugs or prescriptions

Here is a list of a few of the health effects of oversleeping:

♦ Higher risk of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke

♦ Depression or anxiety

♦ Infertility

♦ Increased pain

So the right amount of sleep – neither too much or too little – is an important aspect of productive living and maintaining feelings of well-being.
