Shawn– In a statement released on Monday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said it was “shocking” that she had to explain to the media why Border Patrol officers needed to protect themselves from violent migrants hurling rocks and other projectiles at them in an effort to storm the border. Nielsen was unapologetic in her defense of the Border Patrol’s use of tear gas, saying it was time for the media and the American people to become aware of some myths currently circulating about the caravans camped out in Tijuana.

“I refuse to believe that anyone honestly maintains that attacking law enforcement with rocks and projectiles is acceptable,” Nielsen said in her statement. “It is shocking that I have to explain this, but officers can be seriously or fatally injured in such attacks. Self-defense isn’t debatable for most law-abiding Americans.”

Nielsen said that accounts of a small caravan of less than 3,000 migrants were not accurate. She characterized the caravan as “far larger and more organized than previous ones” and consisting of more than 8,000 migrants from Central America. She noted, too, that there were other caravans currently winding their way through Mexico towards the border.

Furthermore, Nielsen suggested that the idea of these migrants being innocent victims of homeland violence, merely in search of American asylum, was also inaccurate. Most of the migrants, she said, would not be granted the asylum they were seeking.

“Historically, less than 10% of those who claim asylum from #Guatemala, #Honduras, and #ElSalvador are found eligible by a federal judge. 90% are not eligible,” Nielson wrote. “At this point we have confirmed that there are over 600 convicted criminals traveling with the caravan flow. This includes individuals known to law enforcement for assault, battery, drug crimes, burglary, rape, child abuse and more. This is serious.”

Sigh.

It’s not only shocking that a government official has to actually defend law enforcement’s use of a perfectly acceptable deterrent, it’s shocking that a great many Americans think the Trump administration is in the wrong when it comes to these caravans.

What would they have the president do? Throw open the border and allow thousands upon thousands of illegal immigrants come into the country on a daily basis? Will they only be satisfied when the United States closely resembles the very same countries from which these people came? Who’s going to save us then? Do we all start marching to Canada?

Oh, but they think it’ll be just fine. Nay, they think it’ll make our country better, because in their feeble brains, diversity is the highest good. Well, Central America is going to have a problem with a shrinking population pretty soon, so maybe America’s bleeding hearts will form a caravan of their own, head south of the border, and get all the diversity they can take.

But probably not.
