Simple Steps Everyone Can Take to Help the Environment

wisdomShortly before his death in March 2018, theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author Stephen Hawking made a harrowing prediction that humans would only have 100 years from now to colonize and populate a new planet. Otherwise, humans face almost certain extinction.

While this 100-year timeframe is most likely outside your life span, it’s not as far away, especially considering life started on Earth 3.5 billion years ago. The good news is that you can make an impact today, help save the planet, and prolong the existence of our species just by following these simple steps.

Lower Your Heating and Cooling Usage

According to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for nearly half of American energy bills, while water heating adds an additional 18 percent to the tally. Not only does this run up your monthly expenses, but it also uses more energy which equates to pollution and emissions. That’s because 65 percent of energy comes from fossil fuels, which emit greenhouse gases.

However, you can take some steps to reduce the amount of energy you use on heating and cooling. During winter, wear layers of heavy clothing inside and use extra blankets while you sleep. In warm weather months, supplement your air conditioner by using ceiling, tabletop, or floor fans, and use curtains to prevent heat from seeping into the home during the day. You can also shorten your showers throughout the year or try taking a cold shower. When it’s hot outside, it’s more refreshing than you might think.

Switch to LEDs

LED lights, are the latest types of bulbs to enter the market. Using LEDs, these bulbs are up to 70 percent more efficient than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs because only 5 percent of the energy created is wasted as heat. In comparison to other bulbs, LEDs also offer:

• A life span 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs and three times longer than compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs.

• 80 percent less energy and purchase costs of incandescent bulbs.

• 25 percent less overall costs compared to CFLs.

LED lights also come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, making them the ideal choice for interior, exterior, and holiday lighting.

Cut Back on Car Usage

Not every U.S. city sports stellar public transit, but if you’re a resident of cities like Chicago or New York, take advantage of your public transportation. They lower emissions considerably over car usage, while also providing a convenient service, so you don’t have to worry about parking. If you aren’t lucky enough to have good public transportation, you should still consider biking or walking to your destination. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise, and scale back emissions from your vehicle.

No single person can save the planet, but by making a concerted effort to change your bad habits and set an example for younger generations, you can definitely make an impact. Plus, you’ll get the added bonus of knowing you made a difference, even if you aren’t around long enough to see it. That’s an honor in itself.
